John Duthie - Poker Player Profile - Poker Tournaments

Poker Player - John Duthie

John Duthie was the first poker player in the world to win $1 million in a televised poker event in 2000 beating off 155 other competitors. In 2005 he made it to the WSOP Main Event final table, finishing 9th for $55,750. His biggest achievement has been creating the European Poker Tour (EPT) in 2004, which he has made the biggest poker tour in Europe and a strong competitor to the big American tours. He is also a member of Team Poker Stars Pro and his earnings to date are $1.8 million.

As well as poker, Duthie has been known to gamble on the roulette tables where he used the Biarritz system to try and win. However, he soon gave up on the roulette tables altogether after losing too much money on them. He is also known for his reckless play when in a poker game. He once raised blind at every flop and then bet the maximum he could still blind. That night his system did work however he admits the system is not foolproof: “Sometimes it works, but more often then not I get wrecked!”

John Duthie was born in 1958 in Yorkshire but is now based in London. As well as being a poker player he is also a television director and has achieved success in his career having directed well-known programmes such as Hollyoaks, Clocking Off and Silent Witness.

Duthie used his broadcast knowledge in 2004 when, along with PokerStars.com, he launched the EPT, which is now Europe’s most prestigious poker tour and is broadcast in over 40 different countries around the world. Both Duthie’s poker knowledge and directorial skills were used when he was asked to work on the set of the James Bond film Casino Royale to bring more realism to the poker scenes. He also created the programme Late Night Poker, which was the first televised poker programme to use the hole cam which allows viewers to see the players’ hole cards whilst they were still in their hands.

Outside of his work as a director and poker player Duthie enjoys golf, fishing and reading. He also has ambitions of making his own successful feature film as well as winning the WSOP. His favourite film is On The Waterfront and he enjoys listening to UK garage music. He also has a wife and two children.
