How To Play Omaha Poker:

Omaha poker is a gambling card game that is derived from the variant of the poker game known as ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ poker. It is a game for between two and eight players, when played in a casino although the game can be extended for up to eleven players when played at home on a private table. The principles of this version of poker are relatively simple and therefore Omaha poker usually results in a smooth and enjoyable game play, meaning that it is a very popular card game. The game uses community cards as well as each players’ individual ‘pocket’ cards to form the usual poker hands.

The game uses a standard fifty-two deck of cards which must be shuffled by the dealer. The game begins with the two players to the left of the dealer ‘placing blinds’. ‘Blinds’ are initial bets, that determine the value of the basic bets to be made as the game progresses, as well as providing some money, or chips in the pot to start off the game. Each player is then dealt four cards, face down in front of them. These cards are referred to as ‘hole’ or ‘pocket’ cards and will be seen only by the individual player. Then follows a round of betting for all players who may choose to check, raise or fold their hand. Obviously any players who choose to fold and forfeit the hand are no longer in the game. The game then continues with all remaining players.

The dealer then moves onto the stage of dealing ‘community’ cards- cards than can be used by all players to create valid poker hands. Before dealing the cards onto the table, the dealer must deal a burn card- this is the top card of the remaining stub deck, which may not be dealt to any of the player in order to avoid cheating. Three cards are then dealt in the ‘flop’ round, and all are communal cards. After this there is another betting round, and once again, on the basis of the community cards that have been dealt players may decide to fold and forfeit the hand.

The ‘Turn’ card round then begins, with the burn card being dealt once more, and one more community card being turned face up onto the game table. Once again this card can be used in combination with other cards to form a poker hand. The final five card poker hand that a player forms must be made from three of the community cards and two of their personal ‘pocket’ cards. There is yet another betting round before the final community or ‘river’ card is dealt onto the table. Therefore, there will be a total of five community cards and four individual pocket cards, which can be used in a combination of three and two cards respectively, to form the five card poker hand. One final round of betting follows before all remaining players reveal their hands, which is known as the ‘showdown’. The best hand will win the total value of the pot.

The most important rule of Omaha poker is that the final hand must be made of two of the player’s pocket cards and three community cards. The usual poker hands apply and are used to rank the hands produced by the players in the ‘showdown’, with the Royal Flush as the very highest ranking hand. Omaha poker is yet another card game that has been revolutionised by the online gaming industry, expanding its appeal even further a field than casinos and private gaming tables.
